Boiler repair covers fixing a fault rather than replacing the whole boiler, and most faults can be fixed without a full replacement. Repairs typically cost £120 to £750, averaging around £300, depending on the fault, the parts needed, and whether it's an emergency. We'll pass your details to a local Gas Safe registered engineer who can diagnose the fault and give you a firm price.

Whatever brand you have, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi or another, and whatever's gone wrong, no heating, no hot water, low pressure, a leak, or a strange noise, this site covers the common faults, what they usually cost, and when it's worth calling someone.

Is changing a boiler a big job?

Replacing a boiler is a bigger job than a repair, usually a full day's work for a straightforward swap, longer if pipework needs moving or the new boiler's a different type. It's also a bigger cost: a new boiler runs well into four figures, against £120 to £750 for a typical repair.

Most faults don't need a full replacement. An engineer will usually recommend repair first, and only suggest replacing the boiler if it's old, the fault's expensive to fix, or repairs have become frequent. If you're trying to decide between the two, see our boiler repair cost guide for what a repair typically runs to.

Should a 20 year old boiler be replaced?

Not automatically. A 20 year old boiler can still be worth repairing if the fault is minor, parts are available, and it's otherwise been reliable. Most boilers last 10 to 15 years with regular servicing, so one that's reached 20 is past typical lifespan, and repairs can become harder to justify if they're frequent or parts are hard to source.

The practical test is cost and frequency: if you're calling an engineer out several times a year, or a single repair costs a large chunk of what a new boiler would, replacement usually makes more financial sense.

Who do I call if my boiler stops working?

For any boiler fault, you want a Gas Safe registered engineer, and that's who we'll pass your enquiry to. Tell us what's happened: no heating, no hot water, a leak, a noise, or something else, and whether it's urgent, so the engineer you're matched with knows what to expect before they arrive. You choose how much detail to give, but the more specific you are, the faster they can help.

If you suspect a gas leak or carbon monoxide rather than an ordinary fault, from the boiler or any other gas appliances in the house, don't wait for a routine booking. See our boiler emergency repair page for what to do and who to call immediately.

What's the first thing to check when your boiler won't work?

Check the boiler's display for an error code or a locked-out light, then check the pressure gauge: most combi boilers should read 1 to 1.5 bar when the system's cold. Those two checks point toward the likely cause faster than anything else you can do yourself.

From there, what you've lost (heating, hot water, or both) narrows it down further. Our boiler not working guide walks through the common patterns, and our low pressure boiler page covers pressure specifically. If the problem's water rather than heat, see water leaking boiler.

Questions people ask

Are combi boilers being phased out?

No. A previously proposed 2035 phase-out for gas boiler replacements in existing UK homes was dropped by the government in its Warm Homes Plan, and there's no date for combi boilers to be banned. The one firm change is for new-build homes: from March 2027, new properties in England will generally be built with heat pumps or heat networks instead of gas boilers, under the Future Homes Standard. Existing homes aren't affected, and you won't be required to replace a working gas boiler.

What happens if your boiler stops working?

You lose some or all of heating and hot water, depending on the fault. Most boilers show an error code or a flashing light when something's wrong, which is the fastest way to tell what's happened. A Gas Safe registered engineer can usually diagnose and often fix the fault in a single visit if the part needed is one they carry with them.

My boiler isn't working after a power cut. How can I fix it?

Many boilers need a manual reset after a power cut, usually a button on the front panel held for a few seconds. If it doesn't restart, or restarts and then cuts out again, that points to a fault rather than the power cut itself, often with the ignition or control board. Our boiler reset not working guide covers this in more detail.

Why is my boiler not getting hot water?

Heating that works with no hot water usually means a faulty diverter valve, the part that switches the boiler between heating radiators and heating your taps, or a failed hot water sensor. It's a common and often straightforward repair on a combi boiler. See our boiler not working page for the full set of possible causes.

How much is a boiler service in the UK?

A gas boiler service averages £100, typically £80 to £120. It's different from a repair, a service is a yearly safety and performance check, not a fix for an existing fault. See our boiler servicing page for what's included and how often you need one.
